Change4life 10 Minute Shake Up

Change4Life 10 Minute Shake Up is back

The campaign from Public Health England encourages families to kick off a summer of activity so that children get the recommended 60 minutes of exercise they need each day. It’s much easier to break this down into fun 10 minute bursts and get the whole family involved.

Being active helps improve children’s physical health and mental wellbeing as well as build social skills, boost confidence and maintain a healthy weight. Just 23% of boys and 16% of girls in the South East currently meet the daily national recommended level of activity of 60 minutes.

The 10 Minute Shake Up feature characters from Disney Pixar’s animation Cars 3, as well as other Disney favourites from Beauty and the Beast and Moana. New shake ups will be released each week over the summer holidays and will focus on core skills such as running, jumping, throwing, catching and balance. They also aim to inspire longer term activity among children, promoting healthy habits all year round.

It’s easy for families to get involved – make sure you visit Change4Life to find out more.

Clean Hands

Our Reception children, along with Years 1 and 2, welcomed Caroline from the School Nursing Team into school. She spoke to each class about hand washing: when we need to wash our hands and how to wash them well. Children rubbed special cream into their hands and then the fun and excitement began. The room was darkened and children got to look at their hands under the ultra violet light, this showed where the dirt was on their hands. Children then washed their hands before they were checked again.

This practical activity was powerful as the children saw their hands dirty and then clean and the message seemed to have been taken on board. The Reception children all washed their hands beautifully before lunchtime. Year 1 came back to report ‘I washed my hands’; they were very excited and proud. A child in Year 2 reported ‘I washed my hands so well when I put my hands under the machine there was no dirt’.

HERE is the presentation she shared with the children.

For Years 1 and 2 Caroline also showed a short clip on the flu vaccine. If you wish to look at the clip the link is HERE.
