Numbers Count 1 & 2

Numbers Count is a Maths Programme run by a qualified teacher. Stepgates Community School was in the first of cohort of 20 schools in Surrey to introduce Numbers Count in September 2010.

Numbers Count 1 is for children in Years 1 – 3 and in January 2013 we began Numbers Count 2 for children in years 4 – 6.

Each child will have a minimum of 40 lessons over 3 to 4 months and are taught individually or in pairs.

Lessons take place in our Numbers Count room which is bright and full of many resources that help children with their learning, helping them to build their mathematical knowledge in a range of contexts. The lessons are specific to individual children and build upon what they can already do. The lessons are fast paced and aim to help the children develop their understanding through the resources chosen and through personalised learning. Finding out the child’s interests such as cars, Ben Ten, Hello Kitty, Frozen, horses allows me to present activities that the children enjoy but just as importantly provides context and meaning for their learning.

Through the programme the children become active in their own learning and class teachers report an increase in confidence back in the classroom. The individual nature of these lessons seems to really support and develop children self- esteem and self – confidence in all areas of their learning.

Numbers Count Teacher

First Class @ Number1

In January 2014 we introduced a new Maths Intervention Programme. It is run by a teaching assistant and is aimed at Year 1 and 2 children. Our specially trained teaching assistant is provided with detailed lesson plans that they adapt for the children they are teaching.

First Class at Number is a 25 lesson programme to support children’s understanding of Number, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division.

These lessons are taught as a small group of 3 or 4 children who have 3 lessons per week for 12 to 15 weeks. They are based around a Post Office theme: children use letters, parcels, postcards and house numbers to support their mathematics and write postcards to tell their class teachers about their achievements.
