Welcome to Reading Recovery

Reading Recovery is a catch up, reading/writing programme for children who have had a full year at school but who may not have reached age appropriate levels in reading by the time they enter year 1. The aim of the programme is to accelerate children's reading progress to the age appropriate level over 12 - 20 weeks.

The children are assessed at the beginning and end of the programme to measure progress made.

The programme consists of a daily, one to one, half hour lesson with a qualified Reading Recovery teacher (Mrs Simon). During the lesson the child will read at least three little books, work on letters and words including phonics and compose and write some sentences. A new reading book is introduced daily but the book taken home will be one that has already been read twice. In this way the children learn as they read and write. Progress is usually rapid.

The programme has a success rate nationally of around 80-90% and the majority of the children make accelerated progress. The small number of children who don't reach the required level will still have progressed but may need further help when the programme ends.

When children have finished the programme, they are monitored and assessed at three months and six months to ensure that they are still progressing.
